This autumn, Berlin stands under the sign of art: around 430 galleries, 180 museums and 150 theatres, and the large German contemporary art fairs invite for a journey of discovery in the German capital.

Art and wine

Prelude to the Berliner art autumn is the new festival “Art and Wine”. For the first time, on the 5 September 2010, around 70 Berliner galleries in cooperation with the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) are offering tastings of the best German wines. Visitors can choose between more than 200 guided-tours on the subject of contemporary art or wine. At the 15th Berlin Art Forum, from 7-10 October 2010, the leading galleries of the international art scene present works from the 1960’s to present—40,000 visitors are expected for it.

Scent of gingerbread at the christmas markets

But also before the Christmas holiday season, Berlin is worth a visit. When the days get shorter, the capital, with long nights, extraordinary illuminations and the first pre-Christmas offers, invites one to come to the Spree. The 2010/2011 winter sparkles with an unmatchable variety of Christmas markets, an almost unlimited number of shopping possibilities and exceptional events. The capital offers a perfect mixture of festive Christmas spirit and big city flair, and that all the way into January.

Turn of the year at Brandenburger Tor

Moreover, for the turn of the year, Germany’s largest New Year’s party, right at Brandenburg Gate, woos with a music programme and gigantic firework display. A highpoint of the coming year is the exhibition “Renaissance Faces” in the Bode-museum on Berlin’s Museum Island. Berlin and New York are currently organising the spectacular exhibition with masterworks of Italian portraiture from out of the world’s major museums. To be seen are, among others, pictures by Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli. Exhibition opening is in August 2011.
